Description: Edmund John Niemann (1813-1876)
Ashdown Forest, Kent
oil on canvas
30 x 40 in. (76.3 x 101.6 cm.)
Notes: Edmund John Niemann (1813-1876)
Niemann was born in Islington of a German father. He was employed at Lloyds until 1839, when he relocated to High Wycombe to concentrate on his art. He worked relentlessly on his often large landscapes capturing the transience of nature. He exhibited his work at the Royal Academy, British Institute and at Suffolk Street, returning to London in 1848 for the foundation of the Free Exhibition, later the Portland Gallery, of which he became secretary and trustee. Subjects for his paintings often include the Thames and the Swale near Richmond in Yorkshire.
