Artist : M. EMILY CARR ~ [1871-1945] Canadian Title : Untitled - Sproat Lake [Klitsa Mountain] Media : oil on wood board 14 x 10 in. / 36 x 25 cm. Dated: 1908-09 Notes: signed in red lower left; signed verso; framed Reference: Emily Carr's first trip up the west coast of Vancouver Island was in 1899 just shortly before she travelled to England to study at the Westminster School of Art. Following the period of study and ill health in England [1899-1904] Carr made her first trip to Sproat Lake in 1905. Carr claims in her writing that it was the return to the British Columbian landscape which restored her health and spirit. Carr returned to Sproat Lake in 1908 and 1909 as vacations from her teaching and painting career in Vancouver [1906-1910]. On several occasions in the 1920s and once in the early 1930s Carr stayed at Klitsa Lodge from which this view was apparent. Carr gave the owners gifts of her handmade Klee Wyck pottery. Choice of subject matter, palette and style link this oil painting to Carr's earliest visits to Sproat Lake, most likely 1908 or 1909. The representational style of this landscape identifies it as a pre France [1910-1911] work. The composition and palette are consistent with Carr's early landscape depictions in both public and private collections. [See the Emily Carr collection of the Royal British Columbia Museum and Archives [R.B.C.M.] and also the early Carr paintings in the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria collection. See Emily Carr: A Centennial Exhibition by D.Shadbolt, pg.67 for a comparable 1909 landscape and similar signature in red pigment.* Provenance: ex-collection Kaare Norgaard; Proceeds to Norgaard Foundation / Queen Alexandra [Childrens] Hospital, Victoria ESTIMATE:
