ARTHUR DRUMMOND (1871-1951) In very good condition having been lightly cleaned but not relined. In contemporary Victorian richly giltwood and composition frame ARRANGING FLOWERS signed and dated 1890, 101 x 65.5cm" Drummond belongs to the small group of late 19th century English artists who specialised in highly realistic classical Greek and Roman subjects. Their number included some of the most gifted painters of their day including E J Poynter (1836-1919), Frederic Leighton (1830-1896) and J W Godward (1861-1922). Drummond's style is however, closest to that of his master, Sir Lawrence Alma-Tudema, OM, RA (1836-1912). Born in Bristol, he was the son of the marine painter, John Drummond and lived in London. In the 1890s he exhibited five pictures at the Royal Academy with titles such as The Last Days of Pompeii and The Gods of the Ancients.
