Cette oeuvre est l'un des trois dessus de cheminée peints par l'artiste pour sa villa de San Domenico en Italie ; elle a également servi de prototype à un tableau plus grand et plus abouti, également exécuté en 1896 (fig. 1).

Le sujet de ce tableau est extrait du Livre IX de l'Odyssée d'Homère, et représente l'un des épisodes les plus célèbres de ce fameux voyage : Polyphème, le cyclope, attaque Ulysse et ses compagnons alors qu'ils sont attirés par la tempête sur les rives de la Sicile lors du retour de Troie.

The present work is one of three overmantels which the artist painted for his own villa at San Domenico in Italy; it also served as a prototype for a larger and more finished painting, also executed in 1896 (fig. 1).

The subject of the present painting is taken from Book IX of Homer's Odyssey, and represents Polypheme, the giant Cyclops, attacking Ulysses and his companions as they are driven by the weather onto the shores of Sicily on their return from Troy.
