Archibald Kay (British, 1860-1935), "Rapids in a Scottish Stream", oil on canvas, signed lower right, 30 in. x 25 1/4 in., in an elaborate period giltwood frame. Note: Kay studied at the Glasgow School of Art with Robert Greenlees (English, 1820-1894) and in Paris with Gustave Boulanger (French, 1824-1888), Jules-Joseph Lefebvre (French, 1836-1911), and Benjamin Constant (French, 1845-1902). He taught art at various schools across Glasgow. Even though Kay spent most of his life in the city, he was almost exclusively a landscapist, preferring to sketch and paint directly from nature. He exhibited in Glasgow, Munich, Berlin, Dresden, Paris, Venice, and at the Royal Academy. He was a member of the Royal Scottish Water Colour Society and in 1905 he was elected president of the Glasgow Art Club.
