Antonio Nicolo Gasparo Jacobsen (Danish/American, 1850-1921)

Portrait of the White Star Royal Mail Steamer Germanic. Signed, dated "A Jacobsen 1878 257 8 Av" l.r., vessel identified on bow. Oil on canvas, 22 x 36 in., in a gilt-gesso frame. Condition: Scattered paint losses, varnish yellowing, surface grime, craquelure.

Note: The Germanic was designed and built by Harland and Woolff, Belfast, in 1874-75, as well as her sister ship, the Britannic. In their day, they both set records of completing 200 round trips between Liverpool and New York, with 400 passages across the Atlantic.
