ANTONIO NICOLO GASPARO JACOBSEN
Danish-American, 1850-1921
The American steam and sail schooner-rigged vessel Gate City. Signed lower right "A. Jacobsen, 1883 705 Palisades Avenue West, Hoboken, New Jersey". The Gate City was built in Chester, Pennsylvania in 1878, and owned by the Ocean Steamship Company of Savannah. She was 254 feet in length and of 1997.11 gross tons, with a homeport of Savannah. Her commander was Captain Daniel Hedge (1839-1906) of East Dennis, Massachusetts. Capt. Hedge married Abby M. Crowell (b. 1838) in 1864, and they had two children, Anna C. Hedge (b. 1868, d. 1878). and Howard C. Hedge (b. 1879). He probably commissioned this painting while he was captain of the Gate City. The painting hung in his East Dennis home, where it remained through the succession of owners.
This is one of the earlier known paintings by Jacobsen, and in original condition with no restoration. Two other versions of this same painting are in the Mariner''s Museum, Newport News, Virginia, however they date from 1888.
Oil on canvas, 29 3/4" x 50". Frame probably original, and needs restoration.
