An elegant couple walking in an extensive landscape red chalk 171 x 295 mm. PROVENANCE A.J. Dezallier d'Argenville (L. 2951), with associated number '3296'. Comte J.P. van Suchtelen (L. 2332). Engraved en maniŠre de crayon by Jean-Charles Fran‡ois (R.-P. no. G194). NOTES This unpublished drawing was used by Watteau in the picture of La promenade sur les remparts painted around 1710-11, formerly in the Julienne Collection now lost and known through a print (fig. 1, detail), E. Dacier and A. Vuaflart, Jean de Julienne et les graveurs de Watteau, Paris, 1922, no. DV113. Other drawings relating to that picture are the small landscape study in the Boymans-van Beuningen Museum, Rotterdam, and the three counterproofs in the Nationalmuseum, Stockholm, P. Rosenberg and L.-A. Prat, Antoine Watteau, Catalogue raisonn‚ des dessins, Milan, 1996, nos. 115, 121-2 and 183. The present drawing was engraved by Jean-Jacques Fran‡ois (1717-1769) on the right of a print en maniŠre de crayon (fig. 2) when it was in the Dezallier d'Argenville Collection. For the left side of the print J.-J. Fran‡ois used another drawing from Dezallier's collection (numbered 3283, Rosenberg and Prat, op. cit., no. 528). Fran‡ois' print was reworked by Gilles Demarteau who added a dog on the left, Rosenberg and Prat, op. cit., fig. G194a.
