ANTOINE ROUX (FRENCH 1765-1835). THE BRIG LOUISA OF PHILADELPHIA. This armed letter-of-marque brig repelled an attack by French privateers out of Algesiras near Gibralter in 1800. The attack, which was witnessed by thousands ashore, was recounted in J. Fennimore Cooper's History of the Navy of the United States of America. Watercolor on paper, 12 1/4 x 17 1/2 inches, sight.
