Auction Location: United Kingdom
Auction Date: 2004
Description: each signed: LEVEQUE
bronze, rich dark brown and gilt patinas
Quantity: 2
Dimensions: each: 23cm., 9in.
Notes: Rarely seen on the market, these models met with considerable success during the Martin-Barye period, from July 1850 to March 1857, when about eighty sets were made. After 1857, the model seems to have ceased production and no posthumous edition is recorded. The signature Leveque is that of Edmond-Louis-Auguste Lévêque (1814-1875), a pupil of Rude and David d'Angers, who exhibited at the Salon as both a sculptor and painter. Barye designed the figurative groups and Lévêque added the shell and base. There appears to be no obvious explanation for this collaboration which was never repeated.
