Lot 32: Antoine-Louis Barye French, 1795-1875 , Les grâces supportant un brûle-parfum (the three graces supporting a perfume burner)
Antoine-Louis Barye - 1795-1875
Auction House: Sotheby's
Auction Location: United Kingdom
Auction Date: 2007
Description: both signed: BARYE bronze, dark brown and green patina on black stone socles
Dimensions: measurements note 36.2cm., 14¼in.
Notes: The present candelabra reuse one of the motifs from Barye?s important garniture de chéminée conceived for the duc de Montpensier in the 1840?s. The garniture included as its central focus the model of Angélique et Roger (see lot 34). These entwined three graces held a perfume burner above the nine lights of Barye?s Candelabres à neuf lumières décorés de six figures. Here the figures are re-worked to form their own candelabra. The whole of the garniture was conceived in a Renaissance idiom and Barye?s reinvention of the Renaissance themes and style was much admired. Writing of the candlesticks, the critic Gustave Planche enthused: ?I have no qualms about affirming that the Reniassance never produced anything more ingenious nor more pure.?
