Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data
Description:
39x25 1/4 inches. Barabino & Graeve, Genoa.
Condition A-: restored losses and restoration in bottom margin.
Creating sprays of wake, one of the majestic ships in the Adriatic Line is speeding through ocean waters beneath a golden, winged lion. One of the several shipping companies to emerge from the breakup of Italy's state controlled shipping agency in 1937, Adriatica, based in Venice, served ports on the Adriatic Sea. The winged lion represents the city of Venice. The Latin inscription reads "Peace be with you, Mark, my Evangelist." It is a reference to St. Mark, who allegedly stopped on one of the Venetian islands during his travels and whose remains are said to rest in St. Mark's basilica, built especially for that purpose.
