NOTE
Provence was a highly personal and irresistible subject for Derain. It provided him with an endless source for experimentation with atmospheric effects of light and colour. In this unusual landscape painting from the early 1930s, Derain celebrates the beauty of the Mediterranean Coast in a new way. Sweeping strokes of dazzling colour are replaced by the muted tones of a setting sun over the forbidding rocky crags that puncture the Provencal panorama.
