Gunnis, Dictionary of British Sculptors. 1660-1851, Cambridge 1954, pp. 147-151 The present bust corresponds directly with Flaxman's bust of the Corsican nationalist, Pasquale de Paoli (1725-1807) on the latter's monument in the south aisle of Westminster Abbey. Paoli was president of his country and successfully fought attempts by the Genoese and French to overthrow his rule. In 1769 he was defeated by the French and fled to England where he became extremely popular. In 1791 and after the outbreak of the French Revolution, Paoli was appointed governor of Corsica. He subscribed to the liberal revolutionary principles, but opposed the radical turn the French Revolution took . Accused of counterrevolutionary activities in 1793, and summoned to Paris, he proclaimed the independence of Corsica and solicited British aid. With the help of Admiral Hood the French were defeated in 1794 and the island was soon declared a British protectorate. Paoli went to England in 1795 and remained there until his death. John Flaxman(1755-1826) was a sculptor, designer and teacher and one of the most famous English Neo-classical sculptors of the late 18th and the early 19th century. He produced comparatively few statues and portrait busts and instead devoted himself to monumental sculpture. Flaxman executed several designs throughout his career for the Wedgewood factory and was greatly hailed for the piety and humanity of his church monuments.
