Blair Laing, Memoirs of an Art Dealer, 1979, page 207 Provenance:Laing Galleries, Toronto Galerie Walter Klinkhoff Inc., Montreal Private Collection, Calgary Alfred Pellan spent much of his life abroad and was heavily influenced by The School of Paris, absorbing the work of Pablo Picasso, Joan MirĂ³, Georges Braques and Henri Matisse. This work is rooted in Pellan's early artistic education in Paris, where a high emphasis was placed on mastering the human figure. Pellan was not conventional, often choosing a creative approach to his painting over a formulaic theory. After refining his academic figure studies, he developed a more intuitive approach to painting. Due to this sensory component of feeling, the melange of surreal, cubist and figurative approaches are loosely intertwined, as can be seen in Affection. Pellan creates extraordinary enjoyment through colour and shape that both surprise and engage the viewer. Canadian art dealer A.R. Laing traveled to Paris in the early 1950s, looking to acquire fresh works to offer to Canadian collectors. Blair Laing writes, "My father spent two weeks in Paris, from January 24 to February 7, 1955. One day was spent with Alfred Pellan, looking at his paintings, and he ended up by buying a collection of his work dating from 1940 to 1950." In his letters written on this trip, A.R. Laing remarks, "Pellan may be a top artist. They think so here in Paris."
