ALEXANDRE BENOIS (RUSSIAN 1870-1960), "Stage Design for Ida Rubinstein's 'Wedding of Cupid and Psyche,'" 1926, gouache, watercolor and charcoal on paper, 52.5 x 42 cm (20 5/8 x 16 1/2 in.), initialed and dated lower right, numerous hand-written directions by Benois on verso. RELATED LITERATURE: Alexandre Benois, "Reminiscences of the Russian Ballet," Putnam, London, 1941; Mark Etkind, "Alexander Nikolaevich Benois: 1870-1960," Isskustvo, Leningrad/Moscow, 1965. In "Reminiscences," Benois notes that it was a great desire of his to work on a ballet set to Bach. He harbored this desire for a long time until it came to fruition in 1928 with a ballet production for Ida Rubinstein's troupe of "Les Noces d'Amour et de Psyche," ("Wedding of Cupid and Psyche"). The ballet was performed in the Summer and Fall of 1928 at the Grand Opera in Paris, but may have begun by late 1927. The musical score was an orchestration written by Arthur Honegger of harpsichord and organ works by Johann Sebastian Bach.
