MAPLE AND BIRCHES signed; inscribed title on the reverse, also inscribed "Blazing Bush, Algonquin Park c 1914" on a typed label on the backing on the reverse oil on panel 20.9 by 26.6 cm. 8 1/4 by 10 1/2 in. This panel was likely executed in the autumn of 1914 during Jackson's second trip to Algonquin Park with Tom Thomson. Jackson comments: "That autumn of 1914 was wonderful with sunny days and frosty nights...we camped first below Tea Lake Dam. It was here I made the sketch from which I later painted Red Maple. The maple, birch and the poplar ran the gamut of colour and finally the tamarac tinted to shimmering gold; falling leaves and snow flurries made us aware that the sketching season was over."
