PROVENANCE

Graphics International Ltd., Washington, D.C.

Acquired by the Gilman Paper Company from the above, 1978

NOTE

This photograph of 'horses on the pasture' was likely taken by Renger-Patzsch on a visit to the Hallig Langeness around 1926. Located off the Northwestern Coast of Germany in the North Sea, the Halligs are a group of ten islands, sparsely inhabited, which owe most of their industry to agriculture. Unprotected by dikes, the salt meadows of the Halligs are often flooded, leaving the land particularly fertile during low tide and making them ideal feeding grounds for the horses and cattle that populate the pastures. Accessible only by boat, or by railcars at low tide, the Halligs were an ideal location to observe and photograph wildlife in a most natural and undisturbed setting.
