Provenance Galerie Druet, Paris (acquired directly from the artist on 12th June 1919) M Heyndricks, Roubaix (acquired from the above in 1919) Jacques Dubourg, Paris Private Collection, Chicago Sale: Christie's, New York, 16th May 1990, lot 367 Sale: Drouot Montaigne, Paris, 12th July 1990, lot 88 Exhibited London, Crane Kalman Gallery, Albert Marquet / Jean Puy, 1958, no. 16 Languedoc Roussillon, Musee de Lodeve, Hotel du Cardinal Fleury, Marquet Retrospective, 1998, no. 23, illustrated in colour in the catalogue In 1908 Marquet settled in his studio on the Quai Saint-Michel, previously occupied by Henri Matisse, from which both artists painted numerous views of the river Seine, its bridges, boats and surrounding buildings. Since the early 1900s Marquet was fascinated with the Parisian landscape, capturing its changing atmosphere trough the seasons. The present view of the famous bridge Saint-Michel was previously depicted by Matisse (fig. 1), as he experimented with colour and the problems of representation, which lead to his Fauve style. Le Pont Saint-Michel sous la neige beautifully captures the tranquility of a cold winter day. With its empty streets, closed booksellers' stalls along the bank and icy river, the city appears to stand still. The nearly monochrome palette with which Marquet depicts the misty atmosphere in the present work differs dramatically from his colourful Fauve-like views of Paris in the summer. Francois Daulte wrote of Marquet's views of Paris: 'Here are Paris and its bridges freeing themselves through the light of the river; here is the Paris of trees sheltering the booksellers; here are the popular quarters with their fences covered with multi-coloured posters and their decaying houses... Nearby, installed on the Quai Saint-Michel, Marquet represents the area around Notre-Dame. He drapes them in the sun of springtime or bathes them in the sad atmosphere of a winter's day, when the snow dribbles down on the quay and a fog, light and damp, hangs over the city' (Francois Daulte, Albert Marquet, Lausanne, 1988, p. 24). To be included in the forthcoming Marquet Catalogue raisonne being prepared by Guy Wildenstein under the sponsorship of the Wildenstein Institute.
