Description: African-Americans Moore, Henry P. "Gwine to de Field," by Henry P. Moore of Concord, New Hampshire. Albumen print, 6.25 x 8.5 inches, on the original mount. 1862 E1500-2000 A Rare and Highly Detailed Image of African-American farm workers on the plantation of James Hopkinson Edisto Island, South Carolina. This photograph was taken after Hopkinson and other plantation owners had left the island following its capture by Union forces. Although technically still slaves, the African-Americans pictured here had possession of the property after it was abandoned by its southern owners. A cropped and captioned variant of this image appears in Robert Taft's book Photography and The American Scene 1938, p. 198
