A MAGNIFICENT KHMER SCULPTURE,
c. 8th-9th Century, pre-Angkor period, of sandstone in the form of Harihara, of museum quality, and significance, Cambodia, 87cm
Provenance: previously from an English collection, London; Note: For a similar example from the same collection cf: Permanent collection of the Art Gallery New South Wales, Sydney, this head was sold by Parkham Place Gallery Sydney and later donated to the gallery
Note: This sculpture is an exceptional and rare example of a Pre-Angkor period sculpture. Sculpted in the image of the Hindu Deity Harihara; half Vishnu and half Shiva, Vishnu (Hari), the cosmic force of creation and Shiva (Hara), the cosmic force of destruction. Represent the two opposing but complementary forces of life and death. The Vishnu half wears a miter on the head, and the Shiva half displays a mattered chignon formed by loops of hair. The style and folding of the Sampot around his waist also indicates an early 8th Century date, standing 106 cm including museum quality display stand.
Estimated Price: AUD23,000 - AUD27,000
