CATALOGUE NOTE
The shepherd and shepherdess figures on the exterior of the punch bowl are more usually found as the central subject of plates, for an illustration of which, together with the source print, see John C. Austin, British Delft at Williamsburg, p. 166, no. 287. A punch bowl of almost identical interior and exterior decoration, but with a different border pattern was sold at Sotheby's, London, October 30, 1973, lot 32.
For a similar guglet see Peter Francis, Irish Delftware an Illustrated History, p. 140, fig. 181 and for the pattern and a discussion of painter's numerals see pp. 68-75 and p. 111.
