SHERRATT & CO.,/61, BRIDGE STREET ROW,/CHESTER., lock stamped SECURE/PATENT/LOCK, now lacking interior lids and wells, the feet replaced, originally with handles 7in. (18cm.) high, 111/2in. (29cm.) wide, 71/2in. (19cm.) deep PROVENANCE Collection of the Dowager Duchess of Montrose. NOTES The rectangular and domed tea-caddy, with antique-fluted and canted pilasters in the French/antique manner, displays paintings of exotic birds beside a veil-draped and pearled escutcheon medallion that is ensigned with the coronet of a Countess. It is labelled as forming part of the Collection of the Dowager Duchess of Montrose. This is likely to have belonged to Duchess Violet Hermione (d.1940), who in 1876 married Douglas 5th Duke of Montrose (d.1925) of Buchan House, Scotland.
