Finch for Iris, november 1901 The circular foot with tapering stem ending in a compressed heart-form with three branches, green glaze on a brown ground, restored foot 37cm. high Impressed ABI, 01.11 and C 2 K NOTES The Belgian artist Alfred William Finch (1854-1930), member of the post-impressionist movement Les XX is best known for his pointillist paintings. Inspired though by William Morris and his Arts & Crafts Movement, Finch started working with ceramics in 1890, soon to be followed by artist-friends like Georges Lemmen and Henry van de Velde. After working at Keramis in La LouviŠre, in Virginal and in Forges-les-Chimay, Finch was asked in 1897 to join the Iris factory in Borga, Finland. From 1902-1930 Finch was professor at the Helsinki School of Decorative Arts. See colour illustration.
