NOTE
The Dutch East India Company ship Witte Leeuw (White Lion) was sunk in a battle with two Portuguese merchant ships in Jamestown Bay off the west coast of Africa in 1613. The wreck, which included large quantities of Chinese porcelain, was excavated in 1976. For a detailed discussion of the wares recovered, see C. L. van der Pijl-Ketel, ed., The Ceramic Load of the Witte-Leeuw (1613). A large group of the recovered wares is now in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.
