NOTE
Grey pottery tripod vessels of this form, with a tall mouth and similar incised decoration are extremely rare. Related tripods were made by many different Neolithic cultures, but the present example is remarkable for its size and decoration. A slightly larger red pottery tripod was sold in our London rooms, 14th November 2000, lot 117; and a grey pottery example of related tall cylindrical form but without a handle was sold in these rooms, 1st December 1992, lot 224.
