A Fine Large KPM Porcelain Plaque, late 19th/early 20th c., "Miriam and Moses," after Paul Delaroche (French, 1797-1856), 20 1/2 in. x 14 1/2 in., KPM and scepter mark en verso, in a finely molded gilt wood frame with original black and gold fretwork liner. This lot represents an exceptional example by the Royal German manufactory, Konigliche Porzellan Manufaktur, or KPM. The lot pictured here is notable for both its scale and its subject matter, the scene of Miriam sending her baby brother, Moses in a basket down the Nile. KPM decorators, who were renowned for their scenes of religious imagery and for their romantic depictions of women, were also known to be highly delicate and detailed painters of porcelain. The "Miriam and Moses" plaque illustrated above is based on a work by the French artist Paul Delaroche, who received the prestigious commission in 1837 for the Hémicycle d'Honneur in the Ecole Nationale Supèrieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
