Description: A COMMONWEALTH SILVER SKILLET AND COVER Unidentified maker, London, England, 1657-58 Marks: (lion passant), (leopard's head crowned), HB (conjoined, mullet below), V 4-3/4 x 10-3/8 x 4-3/4 inches (12.1 x 26.4 x 12.1 cm) 18.87 ounces (gross) PROVENANCE: Nathaniel Mayer Victor, 3rd Baron Rothschild (1910-1990); Thomas Lumley Ltd, London; Sotheby's, New York, October 21, 1998, lot 297; The Charles L. Poor Collection; Sotheby's New York, October 23, 2006, lot 319. The skillet with cylindrical body on three shaped drop feet with socket supporting turned wood handle, applied shield to front engraved with contemporary arms, shield is aligned to the corresponding crest, helm and mantle engraved to the porringer form cover with pierced trefoil handle. The cover is faintly engraved: This porringer was formerly the property of (Elizabeth?) Bamfield Aunt to Sir... Bamfield to whom she left... It appears to have been afterwards given to her sister Catharine Fosters child(ren?) from whom it descended to William Philip Broadway (?) (late?)
