A Carved Marble Figure of an Indian Boy
Randolph Rogers (1825-1892), New York
Mid-19th Century
The boy modeled with hair pulled tightly back, nude except for an animal skin tied about his waist and quiver of arrows across his back, holding a bow and arrow at his hip, standing before a tree stump draped with a game bird, on a circular base inscribed Randolph Rogers, Rome.
Height 3ft 2 1/4in (97cm)
Rogers was born in Waterloo, New York in 1825, and studied in Florence and Rome under Lorenzo Barteloni. In 1853 he returned to the U.S. and spent a year in San Francisco in 1874. He was known as a sculptor of portraits and monuments including the bronze Columbus doors for the United States Capital in 1858 and the statues of Abraham Lincoln for Philadelphia and William Seward for New York. One of his most important works "Nydia" was executed while living in Italy.
Overall good condition with minor abrasions, including small chips to base, two measuring approximately 1 1/2in long. Minor staining to base. Headdress with chip to end of one feather, and loss of another feather. Faint line encircling neck indicates that it is probably reattached. Other small restorations include three places on the bow.
