Cast from a model by John Flaxman (1755-1826), last quarter 18th century On an integrally cast naturalistic plinth and a bronze-mounted cylindrical marble pedestal. Dark brown patina with lighter high points. 143/4 in. (37.5 cm.) high 213/4 in. (55.2 cm.) high, overall LITERATURE COMPARATIVE LITERATURE: R. Reilly, Wedgwood, London, 1989, vol. II, fig. 762, Appendix L.25. NOTES This bronze figure of Mercury is a near identical copy of a black basalt version made by John Flaxman for the Wedgwood factories in 1775. His original invoice to the factory mentions him providing two statues, this figure and another of Apollo, for 1 guinea a piece (see Reilly, loc. cit. ).
