Notes: Rebound in cloth with marbled boards, this antique set is a scarce edition of this classic reference work containing accurate and concise biographies of noteworthy inhabitants of the British Islands and Colonies from the earliest historical period to the date of Queen Victoria's death on January, 22, 1901. Volumes 1-21 were edited by Leslie Stephen. Volumes 22-26 were edited by Leslie Stephen and Sidney Lee. Lee was also the editor of last volumes (Volumes 27-63) and supplementary volumes. These ex-library volumes show mild external age/wear, and are solidly bound with clean, lightly age-toned pages. Catalogue numbers appear in gilt at head of spines, name of library is visible at bottom. Antique library bookplates can be seen on front endpapers. Title pages bear stamps and pencil markings. Final three-volume set of supplementary volumes and volume of errata are in library binding. The books measure approximately 6 3/4" x 9 1/2".
