Publisher: G. P. Putnam & Co.
Printing Years: 1856-1859
Number of Volumes: Complete 5 volume set
Notes: Bound in blindstamped green/brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine, this antique set is a scarce original edition of this biography of the first American president by Washington Irving (April 3, 1783 - November 28, 1859), an American author, essayist, biographer and historian of the early 19th century. He completed this five-volume biography, a work which he expected to be his masterpiece, just eight months before his death, at age 76, in Tarrytown, New York. This is the first edition of the original three volumes expanded to five by Irving.
The work is illustrated with engraved plates with tissue guards, as well as maps. The volumes show mild external age/wear. The books are solidly bound with clean, lightly age-toned pages that show foxing. The books measure approximately 5 1/2" x 7 1/2". Shipping cost (within the U.S.) for this lot will be: $13.50
