Notes: Bound in three-quarter red leather with matching marbled boards and bright gilt embossing to spine, this antique set is a scarce deluxe limited edition of this classic work. The famous biographical studies of the ancients, in the English translation attributed to John Dryden, was revised by Arthur Hugh Clough. This unnumbered copy is from an edition limited to 1,000 sets. The work is illustrated with tissue-guarded frontispiece portraits and plates. These handsome volumes show mild external age/wear (first volume shows small tear at head of spine), and are solidly bound with clean, lightly age-toned pages with gilt top edges and marbled endpapers.
