Author: Maurice Sendak
Publisher: Harper & Row, Publishers

Notes: Bound in pink cloth with black lettering to spine and decorative designs to front covers, this antique set is a scarce first edition of this wonderfully illustrated little set of classics for children by Maurice Bernard Sendak (born June 10, 1928), American writer and illustrator of children's literature. Each of these small books has a lesson to teach: Pierre is the cautionary tale of a little boy who says only "I don't care!" The others delightfully illustrate the alphabet, counting to ten, and the months of the year. These books "show Sendak at the height of his powers as a comic illustrator" (Carpenter & Prichard, 476). Some of the characters, like Pierre and Johnny, were later incorporated into the 1974 television special.
The volumes are in excellent condition, and are solidly bound with clean, bright pages. Dustjackets generally show mild wear,.with particularly noticeable wear at the heads of some spines. There is light wear to the extremities of a well-preserved pictorial slipcase. The books measure approximately 2 3/4" x 3 3/4". Shipping cost (within the U.S.) for this lot will be: $4.50
