This example of a Henry Rifle was manufactured in 1865 by the New Haven Arms Company. The rifle has the distinctive brass receiver and buttplate. The buttplate is the late pattern with pointed heel. The rifle has a walnut stock and is fitted with a sling swivel on the left side of the stock and a sling loop and ring on the left side of the barrel. The barrel has a crescent, German silver, front sight and a folding leaf rear sight mounted in a dove-tail on the barrel. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the legend: "HENRY'S PAT. OCT.16. 1860 / MANUFACT'D. BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS. CO. NEWHAVEN. CT" in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The serial number "9196." is stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver, on the left side of the tang, in the upper tang inlet of the stock and on the inside of the buttplate. The late pattern buttplate cap screws are correctly not serial numbered. All of the visible serial numbers match. The rifle is fitted with a reproduction Henry leather sling and hook. Most Henry Rifles manufactured during the Civil War were privately purchased by Federal soldiers from Midwestern regiments. The firepower of the Henry Rifles was valued on the frontier in the years that followed the Civil War. Most Henry Rifles were 'working' guns; the surviving examples typically exhibit wear associated with years of hard use.
