Early issue, hand crafted style. 887 Thousand. and value stamped on coin. Hand-punched lettered edge. Target reverse. K-2, B-7704. AU-55 (PCGS). Rarity-5. Rich, warm yellow-orange gold. Few marks. Light normal handling. An exceptional specimen from a technical as well as an aesthetic viewpoint. This is the focal point, the centerpiece coin of California coinage, the paradigm of a pioneer issue.
In their time these pieces were familiarly known as slugs, less often, adobes. Many contemporary accounts exist of their use, which in the early years seems to have been concentrated in gambling halls.
