    Stride & Son have held sales at their Southdown House Saleroom for over fifty years and have had a constant presence in Chichester since 1890, when the firm was originally set up to hold sales at the newly built cattle market. Stride & Son are now predominantly Fine Art Auctioneers with an enviable reputation throughout West Sussex and Hampshire, built on our foundation principle of quality customer service. Our practice is governed by Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors regulations, ensuring that your business will be dealt with professionally at all times.

    Antiques and Effects

    We hold monthly auctions of about 1000 lots of fine art, collectables, antiques and furniture, which are consigned for sale and furniture, which are consigned for sale from local estates and private individuals. The auctions are attended by a wide range of buyers from the trade and the public.

    Oil painting by L.S.Lowry titled 'Old Houses' signed and dated 1957.Sold for £98,000
    alongside a pair of Chinese Export Plates, scenes of Table Mountain, Cape Town with
    Dutch ships off the coast. Sold for £9,800 (25/5/01)

    Books and Documents

    Three times a year we hold and auction of Collectors’ Books, Documents and Ephemera. These sales attract a wide variety of interesting lots including a typescript of the famous book ‘The Seven Pillars of Wisdom’ by T E Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia), which sold for £28,000 and a collection of letters from Rudyard Kipling, which sold for £9,850.

    Our book department is open on Wednesday mornings for consultations with our two experts, Derek White MA and Adriaan van Noorden, MA. BSc (Econ), ALA. (Please telephone for an appointment).

    Strides also offer a wide range of professional surveying and estate agency services.
