About Us

The Rago Arts and Auction Center

Tucked away in the bucolic setting of Lambertville, New Jersey sits Rago Arts and Auction Center, one of the country’s most important auction houses, having carved a powerful position in twentieth century art and design in all its manifestations: furniture, paintings, ceramics, silver, sculpture and jewelry. Don’t let this sleepy town locale mislead you. This auction house wields a very active hammer, consistently matching – even outselling - the big gun auction houses in its fields of concentration.

Since its founding by David Rago in 1995 (after a decade of auctions in New York City) Rago Arts and Auction Center has steadily expanded. With its niche in 20th century art and design, the auction house - known as Rago’s - has gained a following of collectors and interior designers who like the fact that it is off the beaten track. “We’re the art and design world’s best kept secret,” said Rago. Among the design cognoscenti who have been seen wielding a paddle are Kelly Wearstler, Jeffrey Bilhuber, Peter Marino, Tom O’Brien, Juan Montoya, Steven Sclaroff, Vincente Wolf, Robert Isabel, and Andre Balazs. And Rago’s has seen its share of celebrity bidders including Brad Pitt, Uma Thurman, Gina Gershon, and Barbara Streisand.

The specialists at Rago’s provide decades of experience and an unmatched degree of personal service to their international clientele. They appear as expert appraisers on the PBS series Antiques Roadshow, at major shows and conferences across the country and publish in their fields. While understandably proud of this level of success and authority, they view accessibility as equally important.
“This is a home for buyers and sellers who seek excellence without attitude,” says David Rago. “We know how to wear our suits. But we prefer to roll up our sleeves. We handle some of the finest property in today’s markets - not just with proficiency, but with genuine enthusiasm. Our clients want that. I honestly believe it’s why we attract the quality of property we do. I also believe its why so many major designers, top dealers and collectors worldwide choose to buy here while people who have never bought or sold at auction feel welcome, as well.”
Attention to consignors is of paramount importance and clients enjoy direct access to partners and experts throughout the valuation, consignment and auction process. A 30-person staff assures a high standard of service to both sellers and buyers, whether new to auctions or long-time clients and friends.

Rago’s holds an average of twelve regularly scheduled sales each year:
