President, Gene Shapiro Auctions, LLC.
Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, Gene Shapiro holds a summa cum laude degree in art history from the University of Pennsylvania, and has studied art history and the art market at the University of California, Berkeley and Christie’s in New York. A recipient of a grant from Christie’s for study at the Collezione Peggy Guggenheim at the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni in Venice, Gene also holds a certification from the Royal Society of the Arts in the United Kingdom. He is frequently called upon for consultations and appraisals of art, and he has lectured on the art market as well as auctioneered for charity events. Gene speaks Russian, French, and Spanish fluently.
Prior to opening Gene Shapiro Auctions, LLC., Gene worked at Sotheby’s, Inc. in the Contemporary Art Department in New York before branching out as a private art dealer specializing in Russian, European and American artwork from old masters to the present day. Capitalizing on his experience and contacts in these fields, Gene established Gene Shapiro Auctions LLC. to better serve his clients' needs for consistently high levels of expertise and professionalism, along with a unified marketing strategy for a global and multilingual clientele.
