An identical pair of armchairs, formerly in the collection of the late Vincent Fourcade, was offered for sale, Sotheby's New York, October 14, 1988, lot 57, illustrated. Another pair of armchairs with plain top rail but identical armrests and lion-carved supports was with Galerie Ariane Dandois, Paris, illustrated, M. Deschamps, Empire, New York, 1994, p. 110. The latter pair was said to be after a drawing by the architect Bernard Poyet. Deschamps also cites a similar armchair now in the Musée des Arts Decoratifs, formerly belonging to the President of the Assemblée.The design of a winged lion of Assyrian inspiration is frequently found in the designs of Percier and Fontaine, e.g. on a table designed for Citoyen V's bedroom, and supporting a desk made for Monsieur V in Paris, reproduced, Percier and Fontaine, Empire Stylebook of Interior Design, Dover Edition, 1991, pls. 17 and 32. These designs were reproduced throughout Europe, particularly in Italy where many variations are recorded. The construction of the present lot and the woods employed suggest that it is more than likely of Italian manufacture.
