Lot 1: BASSA HELMET MASK

Bassa, Liberia, helmet mask, hollowed ovoid form, stylized mask-like face, beneath a large, domed forehead and coiffure, pre-1950, 18" h.

 

Lot 1A: SENUFO FIRESPITTER MASK

Senufo, Ivory Coast, firespitter mask, large polychromatic mask with double snouts and open mouths, with rows of teeth, multiple sets of curved parallel horns, used in connection with the funerals of important individuals, mid 20th c., 30" w.

 

Lot 1B: DAN MASK

Dan, Liberia, Deangle Society, mask, encrusted surface reflecting much sacrificial use, pre-1950, masks of deceased members of the Poro society were sometimes put on family altars and libations offered to them, 9" h.
