Viewing NotesONE DAY AUCTION: SATURDAY, March 23, 2032 - 11:00 AM. We will be offering at auction a very unique selection of African artifacts. Over the past few years, we have acquired several collections of important African sculpture, masks, and accouterments and are now ready to bring these fine pieces to the podium.
Sale NotesAmong the lots represented in this auction are items from the following collections: The Museum of African Culture, Portland, Maine The Museum of African Culture was founded by Oscar Mokeme and Art Aleshire August 8, 1998 in Portland Maine. It is the only institution in northern New England devoted exclusively to sub-Saharan African arts and culture. The Collection of Professor Tom Cavenaugh (1923 - ) Prof. Cavenaugh has been a serious collector of African and Pre-Columbian artifacts for more than 30 Years. He currently lives and works in his studio in Navarre Beach, Florida. The Collection of Professor Gustavo A. Umpierre (1931-2011) A professor of Spanish Language and Literature at Emory University, Atlanta, and he later taught at the City College of New York and Fordham College. While living in New York, he began collecting African art, and he amassed a large collection of these artifacts. The Collection of Marvin Sadik (1932 - ) In 1961, Mr. Sadik became the Museum Director at Bowdoin College. Between 1967-1969, he was the founding director of the Art Museum at the University of Connecticut. From 1969-1981 Mr. Sadik was director of the National Portrait Gallery in Washington.
