Description: Augustin Amant Constant Fidele Edouart (1781-1861) - A Musical Ensemble - Mr Nicholas Phene Junior, Mr Nicholas Phene Senior and Miss Maria Phene, circa 1828, cut silhouette on card, 27.5 x 42cm., unframed Mr Nicholas Phene (1778-1831) was the son of the Reverend Nicholas Phene minister at Bradford Upon Avon. He practised Law at Melksham near Bath and it was at this time, circa 1828-1830, that Edouart was living between Cheltenham and Bristol. Nicholas Phene junior was born in 1806 and his sister Maria Phene was born in 1810. Inscribed on the reverse of the card "These silhouette portraits are the work of General Edouart of the First Empire Army and were saved from the wreck of the ship "Oneida", in 1850 on her voyage from New York to Le Havre. Sue McKechnie writes in her British Silhouette Artists 1760-1860 that "Edouart was born in Dunkerque in 1789 and managed a china factory in that area at the age of nineteen. He served in the Napoleonic wars and was decorated (four of his brothers died). The exact period of his military service is unknown". His rank of General as referred to above is a puzzle as one assumes his time spent in the Empire Army was a short one. However it is recorded that after Edouarts later career spent in the United States, 1839-49, on his return for England he was shipwrecked. Many of his valuable volumes of duplicates were lost, some 9000 portraits in all!. However it is recorded that fourteen volumes were saved. After a period of rest and recuperation spent with the Lukis family in Guernsey, Edouart went on to Calais. Sadly, he did not return to his silhouette work after the incident.View additional info »
