Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Blank leaves are not connected. Simple, loose, original binding. Owner signatures. The infamous Kutaisi blood libel in the Sachkere village took place on 4.4.1878. Nine Jewish peddlers were accused of murdering a six-year old Christian girl in order to use her blood for baking matzot. Their trial took place in Kutaisi, and was known as the 'Kutaisi Trial'. This libel was publicized worldwide and many Jewish personalities such as Moshe Montefiore and Baron Ginsburg of St. Petersburg tried to assist them. Two famous lawyers, one Russian and one Jew, brought about their acquittal in 1879 in Georgia's Supreme Court. An autopsy of the girl proved that there was no connection between the Jewish peddlers and the murder. In fact, some of the witnesses retracted their testimony and admitted that they had been asked to lie. After the trial, the witnesses were convicted of perjury. Georgian Jews published this book right after the trial to put a stop to the blood libels. Important work. Especially rare. Advertisements for Jewish books in Hebrew and Russian.
