DECORATED CHIPPENDALE BLANKET CHEST.

Lot 1: DECORATED CHIPPENDALE BLANKET CHEST.

Description: DECORATED CHIPPENDALE BLANKET CHEST. Pennsylvania, dated 1802, poplar. Dovetailed case, two drawers, and bracket feet. Retains its original paint, consisting of a tripartite façade with tulips and "Barbara Erthmenem 1802" and stars on the sides. Imperfections. 26"h. 50.5"w. 22"d. Sold at Alderfer Auction Company (Pennsylvania), December 2008, lot 2376. Another chest by the same hand is in the Winterthur Museum collection and illustrated in Fabian, The Pennsylvania-German Decorated Chest, fig. 237.

Condition Report: Original paint, paint loss on the drawers, top of lid is largely scrubbed of paint, period brasses in original holes (may be original brasses), original hinges, missing all locks, some minor damage to the side edge moldings on the lid. Has been cleaned since it sold in 2008. The feet and attached base molding are well-executed replacements; the front base molding and worn spurs are original and pieced into the replaced straight bracket feet.
