Lot 1501: LUDWIG EMIL GRIMM, PORTAIT OF AMALIE HASSENPFLUG, oil on canvas, 42 x 37 cm
Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data
Description: Amalie Hassenpflug (1800-1871) was the sister of Ludwig Hassenpflug. In 1822 he married Lotte Grimm, the sister of the fairy-tale collectors Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm and the painter Ludwig Emil Grimm. After his studies in München, Kassel, he set up a studio in 1817 and began work as a freelance painter, initially painting portraits of family members and friends. In his own catalogue raisonné (Bad Homburg v. d. H., Verwaltung der Staatlichen Schlösser und Gärten, Inv. Nr. 1.6.46, S. 16), he mentions for the year 1817 or 1818 ''painted in oil the likeness of Ludw. Hassenpflug, ½ figure, liefesize, as with his sisters Amalie and Marie''. This surely refers to our painting. The whereabouts of this painting was unknown up till now, and only one black and white photograph was available which showed only a detail of the painting: the edge, which showed slight differences of colour and discolouration had evidently been covered by a frame so that the signature and date from Ludwig Emil Grimm was up until now unknown. We would like to thank Dr. Vera Leuschner, Kassel for her kind help with the cataloguing.

Lot 1502: CARL CHRISTIAN VOGEL VON VOGELSTEIN, KING ALBERT OF SAXONIA AS CHILD, oil on canvas (relined), 130 x 97 cm
Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data
Description: The picture of Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg is without doubt one of the most enchanting children's portraits of the 19th century. It depicts the prince, born in 1819, at about six years of age in a violet-blue velvet dress with pale grey fur trim over white pants. Lovingly he holds the head of his rocking horse with the left hand while in the right he holds the whip as a sign of his self-control. For centuries, horses have been an important part of princely education and iconography. In this case, it is only a wooden rocking horse, yet it conveys the standing of this child, the personal radiance of this Prince who would later become one of the most fascinating and beloved personalities of his time. As consort of Queen Victoria, he put his imprint on English politics and the infallibleness of the British constitutional monarchy, still valid today. Prince Albert is considered a progressive innovator in the social and cultural sector and a great champion of new technologies and industrial production. The great love and admiration his wife held for him is also legendary. Carl Christian Vogel von Vogelstein was called to the Dresden Academy of Arts in 1820, and in 1824 he was appointed court painter to King Frederick August I. There is a replica of this portrait, dated 1833, in the Dresden Gemäldegalerie. At that time, Prince Albert was already 14 years old. It shows the boy in the identical pose and dress, however the green brocade curtain is missing that in this portait emphasises the dignity of the small prince.

Lot 1505: CARL GEORG ADOLPH HASENPFLUG, ÜBERLINGEN NEAR LAKE CONSTANCE, oil on canvas (relined), 50 x 64 cm
Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data
Description: This painting is an early work by Carl Hasenpflug. In 1824, the young artist sold his first cathedral painting to the Dresden collector Johann Gottlob Quandt. He used the proceeds to fund a trip to Brandenburg, Magdeburg, Erfurt and Southern Germany, as far as Lake Constance, where our painting may have been created. After his training with the court theatre painter Gropius, Hasenpflug began to focus on the accurate depiction of topographical scenes. This painting is a fine example from that period. It depicts the town walls and the tower of Überlingen with the ruined town gates and, to the right, the edge of Lake Constance. The creation of atmosphere was of particular interest to him. The late afternoon light produces a long, mysterious shadow in the foreground which falls over the buildings, resulting in the prevalence of a peaceful ambience in this small and early composition by Carl Hasenpflug.
