Description: MARTIN SCHONGAUER The Adoration of the Magi. Engraving, circa 1475. 254x168 mm; 10x6 5/8 inches, thread margins. First state (of 3), before the rework and the date. Bull's head watermark. Ex-collection Henri Verver (Lugt supplement 2491 bis, lower right recto). A brilliant, richly-inked impression of this extremely scarce print, with strong contrasts and little to no sign of wear. We have found only 5 other impressions at auction in the past 25 years. A superb, richly-inked and evenly-printed Meder a impression of this very scarce engraving with strong contrasts. The lower part of a bull's head watermark (Meder 62, which he dates from the mid- to late-1400s). Ex-collection Karl Edouard von Liphart (Lugt 1687, verso). Bartsch 80; Meder 79.
