Description: MARTIN SCHONGAUER The Adoration of the Magi. Engraving, circa 1475. 254x168 mm; 10x6 5/8 inches, thread margins. First state (of 3), before the rework and the date. Bull's head watermark. Ex-collection Henri Verver (Lugt supplement 2491 bis, lower right recto). A brilliant, richly-inked impression of this extremely scarce print, with strong contrasts and little to no sign of wear. We have found only 5 other impressions at auction in the past 25 years. A superb, richly-inked and evenly-printed Meder a impression of this very scarce engraving with strong contrasts. A very good, dark and well-inked Meder a-b impression, with strong contrasts, warm plate tone and the fine wiping scratches showing. Trimmed on or just inside the plate mark. Bartsch 95; Meder 82.
