An outstanding image. This is believed to be one of the very earliest ambrotypes - a process developed mainly for portraiture byArcher & Fry in 1851 as a cheaper alternative to Dageurrotypes: it was widely used between 1852 and 1890 but declined markedly after the introduction of the carte de visite in 1860. Two original carte-de-visite albumen prints, c. 1860s, showing Barnum with Anna H Swann of Nova Scotia, and with Captain Martin Van Buren Bates of Kentucky who were at that time the tallest married couple in the world, images by Anthony of Broadway, New York and Gormon of Philadelphia respectively, image sizes 95 x 60 mm Barnum exhibited the couple at his 'Greatest Show on Earth' from 1866-80. They were married in 1871. Original images of Barnum and his exhibits are extremely uncommon. (2)
