Description: (JAPAN) Artful album containing 54 photographs depicting sublime landscapes, street scenes and charming occupationals, including studies of temples, architecture, geishas and tradesmen. Hand-colored mounted albumen prints, 46 measuring approximately 8x10 inches (20.3x25.4 cm.), and the reverse, and 8 measuring approximately 3 1/2x5 1/2 inches (8.9x14 cm.), most with the original tissue guards, many with the caption in English and inventory number in the negative. Oblong folio, elaborate black lacquer covers depicting laborers in a marshy landscape with gilt highlights and ivory inlay; gilt-lettered leather backstrip; all edges gilt; two pages detached; in the original cloth-covered box, side panels detached. Circa 1890
