Description: VENETIAN SCHOOL, 18th c. outside the bounds of identity, masked group at the door possibly sgn. l.r. o/c, 20 by 15 in., framed In Venice the use of public masks was a shared practice regardless of position. It ceased in 1797, at the end of the Veneto Republic. Masks were worn to hide social standing - citizens of any status could be incognito without fear of moral judgment. This habit allowed citizens to easily engage in illegal, decadent and immoral behavior at any time of the day or night. Even priests and nuns engaged in the practice. Rome turned a blind eye as long as wealthy Venice continued to give generous donations. Black lights fine.
